  Overview

   

  What does the quality and safety of care and services in the health care system mean, exactly? How can we best evaluate the quality of care and the risks involved in various treatments? Which tools and methods are appropriate for different situations and what are the pros and cons of each?

  This module offers health care management teams a brand new results-oriented course that leads to concrete application in the workplace. . In addition to incorporating key concepts in managing quality, efficiency and safety, participants will:

  1	Learn to use new tools to analyse, measure and improve quality;
  2	Develop a concrete project in their workplace and put it to the test of the training;
  3	Transfer their new knowledge to their teams with a view to greater empowerment.

  This course is designed for teams of managers (minimum three people per establishment) who are in charge of a quality project or a merger of client groups or programs in their establishment. People involved in quality management activities but not in charge of them will also benefit, provided they have influence within the project and the ability to take action.

    DAY • 1 • Monday September 17, 2012

    • The concepts of quality and safety
    • The notion of evaluation
    • Quality tools
    • Practical application
      Participants will start with a project they have chosen as a model for the problem and type of intervention required.
    • Workshop:
      Using an effective continuum of care and services. This workshop will cover the basics of the Lean and Six Sigma strategies.

    DAY • 2 • Monday November 5, 2012

    • Quality and safety methods and tools
      - Lean
      - Six Sigma
      - Quality control cards
      - The Georges Maguerez method
      - Using the tools in the various methods
    • Workshop:
      Choosing a specific method for a specific process. In this workshop, we examine the relevance of one method over another, using participants' projects.

    DAY • 3 • Monday January 14, 2013

    • Managing change
      - Theoretical models of organizational change
      - Case studies
    • Workshops
      Using projects chosen by the participants, we analyze factors that could help or hinder the project's implementation. Participants learn how to consider such factors to ensure success.
    • Measuring change
      - The different kinds of indicators
      - Characteristics of an indicator
      - Construction of an indicator
    • Workshop
      Participants will learn practical methods for selecting indicators, and building and following a scorecard.

    MARIE-PASCALE POMEY, M. Sc., MD, Ph. D.

    Associate Professor, Department of Health Administration, Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal

    Marie-Pascale Pomey specializes in public health, particularly quality management and health policy analysis. She has participated in revising company manuals on governance and management for health care establishments in France and Canada. She is currently in charge of the master's program in quality and risk management (QUÉOPS-i) being offered at Université de Montréal in partnership with École des hautes études en santé publique (EHESP) in Rennes, France. She is also a consultant in care and service quality at the Institut National d'Excellence en Santé et Services Sociaux (INESSS).

    Emanuel Settecasi, M. Sc.

    Organizational Quality and Safety Consultant

    Emanuel Settecasi has been an organizational quality and safety consultant at the Nord de Lanaudière Health and Social Services Centre since 2004. Over the course of his career, he has held various positions in medical biology at three different hospitals in the province. A medical technologist by training, he is also certified by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science as an Advanced Registered Technologist (ART) in microbiology. In 2008, he was awarded the title of Fellow Medical Technologist. In 2010, Emanuel Settecasi completed a graduate program in administration de la santé option gestion de la qualité (QUEOPSI) and was certified as a Six Sigma Green Belt and he is currently working towards Lean Master certification.
